What is an ISBN?

It is quite surprising how many people don't know what ISBN means. Well, here is a description.

An ISBN, which stands for International Standard Book Number, is a 10 digit code that uniquely identifies a book. An ISBN is issued for each edition of a book, so that the precise book title and edition can be located.

The ISBN can usually be located on the back cover of a book near the barcode as well as within the first few pages of a book.

The ISBN, 0201700735, identifies the book being searched for as:
The C++ Programming Language by Bjarne Stroustrup.
Special Edition.
Published by Addison-Wesley on Feburary 2000.
